Piranhas are a great fish to own. Unfortunately, many people who have bought piranhas with the expectation of having killer fish were disappointed, and began releasing them into nearby lakes and rivers. This senseless act of releasing non native fish into the wild caused some states to ban the keeping of piranhas. Contrary to common belief, it is NOT illegal to own piranhas in the United States. Only some states have made it illegal to keep piranhas. You can safely purchase and keep piranhas in every other state in the country. We have provided a list of states which currently ban the purchase and keeping of piranhas. Please be aware that this list may not be current, as new laws are constantly being added and or changed.
